Chinese Name vs. English Name

Nowadays, many of my foreign friends have own ‘Chinese Name’; some of them make Chinese name because of ‘funny’, some of them do it because of ‘business’. Especially during these few years, many of foreigners will add their Chinese name into their business card.
Every time when I see this, I always asked them, ‘do you know what does these Chinese characters mean? And how do you pronounce it? Do you how to write them? Etc.’
It always made me excited when I know my foreign friends got Chinese name~

It seems many friends are interested in ‘how to decide a Chinese name?’. I’m not an expert in this field, but I think there are few ‘common sense’ I can share with you here :)

Just try to make it simple, so I use point form to descript the common practice about how we decide the Chinese name for a newborn baby. When we name a baby, we always make the Chinese name be:-
1. blessing;
2. show parents’ expectation;
3. simple, easy to write & remember;
4. to praise & or admire the children or the god

In China & its related countries, we always believe ‘meaning of name’ is very important to a man/woman, that’s why our parents cares our Chinese name so much. I think ‘Feng Shui’ is not a new term for all of you; in Chinese society, most of our communities believe that good ‘Feng Shui’ is rather important than a man/woman’s knowledge or capability~

There are so many foreign famous people have got Chinese name already, it makes us more familiar with them (in Chinese societies), like:-

(a) ‘Harry Potter’, his Chinese name is ‘哈利波特’ (translate pronunciation directly)
